In Illinois, broker is the entry-level real estate license. Managing broker is the higher license for people who manage or supervise others. Illinois does not issue a salesperson or sales associate license, so Pass Illinois uses broker language throughout.

The national portion tests general real estate principles. The Illinois portion tests state licensing law, related laws, and disclosures. You must meet the passing standard on each portion.

There is no single answer because every candidate starts with different strengths. The Illinois broker exam has two separately scored portions: national real estate principles and Illinois licensing law, agency, contracts, disclosures, and related rules. A strong score on one portion does not make up for a failing score on the other.
Pass Illinois tracks readiness for each portion and focuses your practice on the topics and calculations in the current Illinois and PSI outlines.
The current PSI table lists 100 scored national questions with 150 minutes and 40 scored Illinois questions with 90 minutes. That is 140 scored questions and 240 minutes, or four hours, across both portions. PSI may also add 5 to 10 unscored questions, and those questions still use exam time.
The national passing standard is 70% raw, which PSI says is equivalent to the former scaled score of 75. The Illinois passing standard is 75%. You must pass both portions, but a candidate who fails only one repeats only the failed portion.
PSI's broker state outline effective June 24, 2026 has four areas: Licensing Requirements, Illinois Real Estate License Act, Additional Illinois Laws and Regulations Affecting Real Estate Practice, and Disclosures. Older three-area state outlines no longer match the dated booklet.
The national portion still has 11 content areas. Pass Illinois maps practice to the current national and four-area Illinois outlines.
Illinois uses “broker” for its entry-level real estate license and “managing broker” for the higher license associated with management and supervision. Illinois does not issue a real estate salesperson license.
Pass Illinois uses Illinois terminology throughout, so the language on screen matches the language on your exam.
The current national broker outline includes seller net proceeds, buyer funds needed at closing, tax and other prorations, transfer fees, PITI estimates, equity, rate of return or capitalization rate, LTV, discount points, and loan origination fees. It also covers structure and land measurement, valuation approaches, and mortgage underwriting concepts such as debt ratios.
The Illinois outline includes transfer taxes. The Illinois state tax is $0.50 per $500 of value, a county may add $0.25 per $500, and a home-rule municipality may charge an additional transfer tax. Always use the rates given in the question.
